Endodontics is a Latin term derived from "endo" (inside) and "donti" (tooth). The endodontics field deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the living tissues inside the tooth, known as the dental pulp (tooth nerve), as well as the surrounding tissues of the tooth.
Endodontic treatment is needed when the living tissue of the tooth (pulp) becomes inflamed. Pulp inflammation can result from various causes, the primary one being infection caused by bacteria in the mouth. Tooth enamel is resistant to bacteria, and healthy enamel prevents bacteria from reaching the pulp. However, after deep decay or tooth fractures, bacteria can reach the pulp through the lost tooth tissue. Once bacteria reach the pulp, they cause inflammation and then pulp necrosis. When the pulp dies, these bacteria can reach the bone, leading to infection (abscess).
To perform root canal treatment, a cavity is created in the tooth to access the tooth’s canals. Through this cavity, the pulp and surrounding infected tissues are removed. Then, the root canals are cleaned. The cleaned canals are then filled, and a filling is placed on the tooth to prevent re-infection.
Although root canal treatment is often perceived as painful, local anesthesia is applied during the procedure, so no pain is felt. Infected tissues can sometimes delay numbing, but with various local anesthesia techniques, the patient’s pain and discomfort are prevented. The source of pain is the infection in the tooth, and this infection is cleaned with root canal treatment. After the root canal treatment is completed, tissue sensitivity may occur for a few days, but this sensation will gradually diminish and disappear within a few days.
How Long Does Root Canal Treatment Take?
The number of sessions needed for root canal treatment depends on the infection level in the tooth. One or more sessions may be required. The exact number of sessions will be determined after our doctor’s examination.
